How is diverticulitis disease typically treated?

Antibiotics: Most people with acute diverticulitis can be treated by antibiotics alone. If mild, antibiotic pills as an out-patient may suffice. With more serious bouts, IV antibiotics and bowel rest in a hospital setting are necessary. On rare occasion, the episode is so severe that emergency surgery is necessary.

Diverticulitis that: Is the infected condition of diverticulosis is treated with bowel rest and antibiotics. Once pain, fever and white blood cell count return to normal we start a liquid diet and gradually advance to a low residue diet which should be maintained for 4-6 weeks to allow the colon inflammation to completely resolve. If multiple episodes elective surgery may be appropriate to avoid further complications.
