Lifestyle changes: It depends on how high and what type of cholesterol. But things you can do to improve your cholesterol are: exercise (five times a week for 30 min), weight loss (at least 5-10% of your weight if you are overweight/obese), increase fiber intake through vegetables, fruits and cereals, decrease the intake of fatty (fast) foods. You can also take fish oil capsules but is better to ask your dr about it.

Agree with Dr. C: If diet and exercise do not bring the cholesterol down to a desirable level you should discuss taking statins, with your doctor.

Diet/Meds: A good bit of cholesterol is related to genetics.High total cholesterol does not mean much without looking at HDL,LDL,VLDL Ratios.Exercise ,(decrease poly saturated and Hydrogenated fats) and (increasing mono saturated and polyunsaturated fats).Do those regardless but may also need meds.
