It depends: Constipation is the inability to have a bowel movement. Some patients only have a bowel movement once every 3 days, but they are not constipated. However 95 percent of patient should have a bowel move within days. Patients who only go to the bathroom 2 times or less per week are constipated. If the is a new symptom, you should see a gastroenterologist.

Fluids and fiber: The best way to prevent constipation is by including plenty of water, fruits, and high fiber foods in your infants diet. If your baby is constipated, try giving prunes, prune juice or pear juice. You can also call your doctor, he/she may recommend other over-the-counter stool softeners.

Most of the time...: ...High-fiber foods and plenty of water. Trouble is, most fiber tastes bad or has a bad texture. There are artificial fiber preparations that are tasteless, and can be added to any drink without making it unpalatable, but bran and bananas are still my favorites.

Constipation: At minimum, you should see a doctor and have a colonoscopy. If this test is normal, then the question is what exactly are your symptoms, and what is the frequency, severity, and impact on function of these symptoms. If constipation cause you to not eat, lose weight, and become ill, or if you cannot work or function socially because of these, it should be treated.

See below: Constipation occurs when you are not emptying your bowels well - often the stool is hard and dry. Try to eat at least 5 servings of veggies per day & 4 of fruit. Hydrate well. Avoid junk carbs & don't overdo the dairy. Stay physically active.

Diet changes: Try to increase the water and fiber in your diet. You can do that by eating more fruit and vegetables on a daily basis. Avoid things that are dehydrating like soda and alcohol. If all else fails you can take a mild stool softener every day, like metamucil, fibercon, or even prunes.
