Hormone replacement: After the thyroid is removed, you will need to take a thyroid pill to replace what the gland had been producing. As long as you take the right amount everyday, you can survive without your thyroid gland.

Thyroid hormone: If only removing 1/2 of the thyroid, most patients don't need replacement. If whole gland removed, then simply follow a blood test called tsh. If high, then the doctor would prescribe a thyroid hormone. Fairly easy to take a single pill daily.
