Examination: Examination by eye care specialist, and some times a b-scan (ultrasound of the eye) is required to determine if the retina is detached. If you have a retinal detachment, the sooner you see a specialist the better.

EyeMD Exam: An rd is usually caused by a hole or tear in the retina or from membranes pulling on the retina. When the retinal layer peels away from the eye wall (like wall paper), it is detached and vision is lost. Symptoms of an rd are painless vision loss, flashing lights, and floaters. You should immediately see an eye md if you have these symptoms. The specialist will do a dilated retina exam.

Get an exam: The only way to find out is to have an exam by a qualified eye MD. AAO.org is very helpful. If you have a retinal detachment, the sooner you see a specialist the better. Time is vision.

Expert exam critical: A careful dilated exam by a qualified ophthalmologist or retinal specialist will likely yield the diagnosis. If there is also vitreous blood or significant cataract, the retinal specialist will also use a B scan ultrasound to know for sure
