Asthma itself: Mucus production is one of the main symptoms of asthma. It is just a sign of airway inflammation generally from an allergen or even an infection. The latter is usually easier to recognize by the discoloration and other symptoms like fever and malaise. Make sure you are treating the asthma. You likely need a daily controller inhaler. Keep in mind, other problems like COPD can present similarly.

Inflammation: Causes increased mucous secretions in airway, which consequently leads to "plugs" of mucous. Mucinex (guaifenesin) 1200mg with adequate hydration is a good start, you may also consider nebulized atrovent treatments as well as inhaled steroids to reduce the inflammation. These options should be discussed with your asthma specialist.
