Doubtful: The "active" ingredient in Mucinex (guaifenesin) is guaiafenisin. It has been hawked by drug huxters as an expectorant for for over 50 years-- something wonderful for loosening up phlegm so you can cough it up from your congested lungs. When the AMA Drug Evaluations was published in 1980, pharm companies were aghast, because it evaluated which drugs worked best. This one was "at least as good as a placebo".
Created for people with ongoing healthcare needs but benefits everyone.

There is one medication which actually works very well as a mucolytic--it is used for tertian cystic fibrosis and asthma as an aerosol, called Mucomist. But it is available over-the counter, called N-acetylcysteine, NAC for short. It does work--comes in 600 mg caps. It is a powerful free radical scavenger amy may help protect the lungs from chronic inflammatory change.

Great answers! Both true. Over the counter "cough and cold" meds are a bunch of hooey, as independent UNBIASED studies have shown for years. Deaths in kids under 2 have been associated with some of them for decades. Big Pharma's answer has been to re-brand these products, make fancier commercials and raise the price! Thank you, Dr. Rhoads! I'm afraid that the FDA has become politicized because of the massive pressures exerted on it by big pharma, and the ravening hoards who wish do defend a particular useless OGC medication. Th expectorant which really works is N-acetylcysteine--NAC--the active ingredient in Mucomist, which is also a great antioxidant, so it is good for you--and available OTC in 600 mg caps
