Cholestrol: Total cholestrol is important but a better look at your lipid panel is take total cholestrol and subtract your HDL cholestrol. This figure is more important. Should be close to 100.

HDL/Choles;: Blood lipid testing should be done on a fasting specimen and should include at a minimum, total cholesterol, hdl, calculated LDL (better if is measured directly) and triglycerides. The data will provide total cholesterol and hdl/total cholesterol ratio. Triglycerides are not related to cholesterol ratio per se but high triglycerides (above 400mg/dl) invalidate calculated ldl.
