2 things: The echocardiogram shows the structures. It is like a motion picture of the heart muscle, valves, and other structures. The doppler shows the flow of blood or the motion of heart tissue (tissue doppler). It is like a radar gun used by the police. It shows the direction and velocity of flow.

Heart function: Basically looks at structure of heart and function of the muscle and valves. Is it beating strongly and symmetrically? Is it too thick or thin? The doppler is used to see how blood flows, esp across valves. Does it regurgitate back or is the valve tight? Anesthesiologists love echos because they take a lot of the guesswork out of someone with bad risk factors or abnormal exam findings.
