Depends, ask doctor: There are several types of "abnormal cells" due to HPV: very mild (ASCUS), low grade (LSIL), high grade (HSIL), and severe dysplasia or carcinoma in situ (the earliest stage of actual cancer). ASCUS and LSIL usually are followed with just repeat exams and pap smears; HSIL and other serious findings require removal of infected tissue. Discuss with your doctor, who can also explain ASCUS, LSIL, etc.
