Is it possible to be too overweight to fly on a plane?

If a person were: too large to fit into a seat that would be problematic. My understanding is that there is not a set weight limit on commercial flights. However, if you are on a small plane there could be weight limit. I flew from Cuba to Miami once on a very small plane - and they did the math to determine our combined weights.
