Charts: Overweight is defined as having a bmi of 25-30 while obese is having a bmi over 30. Bmi is a calculation based on your height and weight. It is not perfect but a very good general guideline for most people to go by ( football athlete with lots of muscle mass may be technically "obese" on the charts while not actually having too much body fat).

The BMI.: Our current definitions for normal weight, overweight and obesity are based on the BMI. It's a governmental index, and it's not perfect but it works. http://www.nhlbi.nih.gov/health/educational/lose_wt/BMI/bmicalc.htm
