A member asked:

Could chronic gastritis not caused by h.pylori still lead to metaplasia, causing reduced symptoms but actually increased canc risk? how would we diagnose?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Gastric metaplasia: Gastric metaplasia can be caused by H. pylori but other risks for metaplasia include alcohol, bile reflux, etc. The risk of gastric adenocarcinoma with GASTRIC metaplasia is really quite small, and is different from metaplasia involving the esophagus (Barrett's mucosa), where the risk for dysplasia or cancer is more significant. metaplasia is diagnosed on tissue biopsy reviewed by a pathologist
