Yes, a doctor: can generally tell if there is an abscess. If you do not get better on the antibiotics that they probably put you on, you should go back to get re-checked. If they thought there was an abscess there, they probably would have sent you to an ear, nose and throat specialist.

Yes: Peritonsillar abscess would have been visible when your throat was examined. If however you begin to experience drooling and having to position your head a certain way in order to breathe, you should seek emergent medical care. Thanks for trusting HealthTap!

Yes: A peri-tonsilar abscess is usually obvious when a patient presents for initial treatment.It is seen when the throat/tonsils are examined. It would be unusual for one to develop while a patient is being treated because of the rapid response to medication seen by most patients.
