Many Possibilities: There are several things it could be other than strep. There are several viruses and bacteria that can purulent discharge in the back of the throat and tonsils. For example, mono can cause a reaction that looks similar to strep throat. Most of these infections will improve with time and without antibiotics. If your symptoms have been worse, it is always reasonable to follow with your physician.
