A member asked:

What are the differences between cervical disc herniation and cervical disc encroachment?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Semantics: A ruptured disc is indicative of a tear in the annulus fibrosis which contains a gelatinous substance, and the rupture sticks out beyond a few mm. If the disc rupture is large enough, it could contact nerve roots or even the spinal cord, and as it gets closer, it is termed encroachment.
