A member asked:

I have a history of gut infections, have been to mayo clinic etc, it's thanksgiving, reoccurrence, can i take expired flagyl and cipro (ciprofloxacin) until doc is in?

GI infection: No. If you suspect a recurrent infection, call your doctor's office. Some one will respond. Doctors are never off and if your doctor is not available, someone is covering. If urgent, go to ER. No doctor will ever tell you that it is OK for you to take expired medications.

No, it is: dangerous to diagnose yourself and self medicate with expired meds. Many different abdominal processes can present with similar symptoms. If you can't get ahold of your doctor, go to the ER or urgent care center.

Call your doctor!: Maybe diverticulitis? Sorry, but this question can't be safely answered on HealthTap or any other online forum. Even with the holiday, you should contact the doctor or clinic managing this problem; undoubtedly someone is on call for situations like this. Perhaps s/he will recommend restarting the antibiotics, but maybe not. (Whether the drugs have "expired" probably makes no difference, though.)
