Yes: The uterus needs to be measured (sounded) to safely insert the MIRENA (levonorgestrel). To not do so would increase the risk of uterine perforation.

Not usually: Once you have had an IUD placed, as long as there have not been problems, you should not need to have your uterus sounded again when it is replaced. Good health.
