I just got my mirena (levonorgestrel) out and was told that during removal it wouldn't hurt. i screamed it hurt so bad! what would cause it to hurt like that? i have a bicornuate uterus.

Cramps.: Your uterine anomaly could certainly explain the unusual pain from iud removal. Preparation with Arthrotec can prevent such discomfort. Cervical manipulation and uterine contractions can cause cramps that should gradually get better and respond to nsaids such as Motrin tylenol (acetaminophen) or aleve.

Inflammation: Iuds work by causing inflammation in the lining of the uterus, thereby preventing the implantation of a fertilized egg (embryo). Inflammation can also cause scaring. My best guess is that because of the shape of your uterus more inflammation occurred and likely a bit of scarring. The scar was disrupted when they removed it causing you pain.
