One in 1000: The incidence of uterine perforation is about 1 in 1000. If a perforation does happen, the IUD can migrate into the abdomen and may need to be retrieved with laparoscopic surgery. The embedded IUDs I have seen are in women who have left the IUD in for 20 years--way longer then recommended. Its not common. Best wishes!
