If complications: Usually rods not removed unless complications such as infection, pseudarthrosis, nerve irritation,fractures of rods, and movement of screws.

Yes: Yes, Once the spine is fused in a straightened position, the rods serve no more function. They can be removed once the spine is healed. Usually a minimum of 6 months after surgery.
