Iron: Iron and vitamins with iron may cause this issue. If you do take a vitamin with iron or iron would suggest stopping it for a while and keep checking your stool. If the black dry flecks persist start keeping a diet log and see if you can relate the appearance of black material to the food you ingest. If no clear conclusion after few weeks ask your doctor for an occult blood test.

Need to test...: Nobody can tell you "virtually" if the specks are blood or not. See your doctor for a stool heme test - then you will have your answer and can get the appropriate care you need if you do indeed have blood in your stool.
