Clot?: if it suddenly became hard this may be an indication of a clot with superficial thrombophlebitis. Warm compresses and ibuprofen may help. If it persists, becomes worse or more red, u would advise seeing your physician for evaluation.

Superficial veins.: A tender raised vein suggests superficial thrombophlebitis. A varicose vein is an enlarged grape-like vein usually in the leg which can become inflamed or clotted. This is called superficial phlebitis (inflammation) or superficial thrombophlebitis (clot). The treatment is usually warm compresses and anti inflammatory medications. See a vein specialist for an evaluation.
