Versed: Often gives inadequate sedation and other side effects such as hiccups. It works better for shorter procedures. It's main job is not to sedate but to help children not to remember a traumatic event. Propofol can be easily adjusted to deliver the appropriate amount of medication. Also if you need to stop it the effects wear off quickly . I hope this helps and any other comments would be great.

Discuss: with the ordering physician or anesthesiologist why the believe that Versed will not offer adequate sedation for the child. How old is the child?

Propofol is better: The propofol is preferable to versed to maintain sedation in infants and children during MRI. It is well documented that nothing beats propofol for the brief painless procedure. Ask your anesthesiologist for more information.

Versed will allow: your child to leave you and enter machine but an MRI requires no motion, the amount of Versed to accomplish this would be excessive, propofol wears off quickly and no residual sedation
