No and no: 1 mg of melatonin is a very low dose and is unlikely to cause brain damage. It is also probably acting as a placebo in your case. Typically if you are aiming for melatonin to help sleep onset you should take it 30 to 45 minutes prior to sleep onset. Other things to consider doing to help sleep onset is have a regular sleep time, avoid caffeine near bedtime, avoid using devices close to bedtime.
