Tonsil stone: The most definitive way to prevent tonsil stones is to remove the tonsils. However, any surgery has risks and the benefits must out weigh potential risks and complications. This is a conversation you should have with your doctor. In the mean time, gargle with salt water after each meal, which will reduce the incident of stone formation.

Not necessarily: Tonsil stones are caused by the collection of debris, bacteria and mucus in the tonsillar crypts that can harden into stones. Sometimes these stones are very large and painful. Surgery would be possibly indicated for very large stones that are painful or causing infection. The fact that your tonsils have huge craters is not an indication for surgery.
