A member asked:

If my hemoglobin is at 10.5 g/dl, is it safe for me to have an abdominoplasty with lipo?

Be careful...: Assuming you are otherwise healthy, you have chosen plastic surgeon carefully, and the operation is performed judiciously, it is likely that you will be OK. For example, it will be important to avoid excessive blood loss, associated with the tummy tuck or liposuction surgery. If in doubt, best to avoid or minimize the amount of liposuctioning at the same time. Emphasize safety first...

Your hemoglobin is below normal.: Depending on the extent of your surgery you will lose some blood during the surgery and if you was starting below normal this will leave you even further below normal after the surgery. In addition there is the risk of further bleeding is a complication after the surgery which is unusual but still possible. I would recommend that your hemoglobin be higher before undertaking elective surgery. If you have no other reason for the low hemoglobin it is probably related to blood loss from your menstruation and this can be easily corrected by taking iron pills. I would check with your surgeon and/or your family practitioner.
