Veins: Varicose veins can be caused by many things. Genetics is just part of the story. Varicose veins happen when the vein becomes too dilated and looses it elasticity or form. Pregnancy, liver disease and a couple of the causes. Compression stockings and exercise can help. It would be important for you to get in for evaluation to determine the cause of your varicose veins. Take care.

Many other factors: besides genetics contribute to varicose veins. These include obesity, deep vein thrombophlebitis, multiple pregancies, and sometimes even just plain bad luck. Good news is that there are many ways to improve them. Ask your doctor for a referral to a vein specialist.

Leaking valves: Varicose veins are a very common problem and they are due to leaking valves (called reflux) usually in the saphenous veins. Think of your veins like a tree with the trunk being the saphenous vein and the branches being the varicose veins. A venous reflux ultrasound will make the diagnosis. Common causes of this are hereditary, aging and pregnancies in women. They are treatable with a laser.
