My mom has pfo which caused a stroke while she was 8mo pregnant at the age of 38. am i at risk if i get pregnant? is pfo genetic?

Patent foramen ovale: There is some recent conflcting evidence on pfo and stroke especially recurrence. It can be familial. Certainly ought to let your doc know if mom had a pfo. That she had a cva when she was pregnant doesn't necessarily mean you're at high risk, remember only half your genes came from her.

No: Nearly 20% of the population have a pfo, and very few of them have a stroke. And pfo by itself does not cause a stroke. If a clot is formed, it is thought that it may cross the pfo to the left side of the heart and to the brain causing the stroke. Pregnancy maybe increase risk of clot formation, but there are other conditions that may also do that.
