Jaw pain: As opposed to not going, or going to another kind of healthcare professional? If one has any degree of jaw, tooth or gum pain, they should see a dentist first. One should also see a dentist for routine dental checkups and cleanings.

Only: Only if you want to feel better. If it is a Dental problem, and it sounds like it is, the Dentist will help you find relief. If it is a non-Dental problem the Dentist will direct you to the correct practitioner.

Oral surgeon: I would see an oral surgeon first. If need be, he can refer you to a general dentist for necessary dental work.
