The Unquiet Mind: There is nothing physical about lying on your back that would increase anxiety. So I find myself wondering if, when you lie down, you have fewer distractions, which makes you focus more on the issues that make you anxious. If so, you can sit up and distract yourself again, or, better yet, pay attention to what scares you and talk to a therapist about it. It's probably important.

A medical issue?: Is it possible you have a medical issue causing you stomach pain, which you are interpreting as anxiety? That would explain why you are having more symptoms when you lie down. Barring that, it is possible you make some sort of emotional connection between lying down and anxiety, or it is possible there are stressors in your environment that are amplified at such times.
