Any meds taken?: One cause of black stools in toddlers is pepto bismol (bismuth subsalicylate). It could also be due to a recent meal that was high in iron/green vegetables or black licorice. Things high in black or blue food coloring have been known to cause dark stools. If the stool is black and tarry looking it could also be due to blood in the stool from bleeding in the stomach. Your Dr can check to see if there's blood in the stool
