Depends: Are you talking about the effects of local anesthetic on your lower lip after a lower jaw restoration? If so, numbness with a swelling sensation could be normal for up to six hours after the procedure. Other wise true swelling is NOT normal after undergoing tooth restorations. Swelling is suggestive of either an abscess from a tooth or a hematoma from the injection site.

Lip biting is common: self-inflicted lip trauma is a complication of dental treatment involving local anesthesia. You can't feel that you are doing damage to the numb lip. Fortunately, it always heals up within a few days without complications. Take care.
