MD evaluation: This is probably a lumbar disc problem or narrowing of the space where the nerve that supplies your left calf comes out of the spine area which is called stenosis. A treatment for this could be muscle relaxant, steroid pack, no lift/push/pull, rest and when better physical therapy. An x-ray and/or MRI of the back for diagnostic purposes could be done. See your MD for advise and treatment.

Can't do it forever: Well, for the short term acute fix perhaps pain killers are acceptable but in the long run you need to know WHY the pain in the back and move to fix that. Check with your nearest local friendly neurologist to see if you don't have sciatica and how you can start treating it over the long haul so it resolves or is controlled with more reasonable types of medications.
