Endometriosis: Patches of endometrial tissue—normally occurring only in the lining of the uterus (endometrium)—appear outside the uterus. The misplaced endometrial tissue responds to hormones as normal endometrial tissue, it can bleed and cause pain. When it is inactive, the patches of endometrium remain quiet and do not bleed or cause pain for some time.
