Chronic Condition: Endometriosis is a chronic female condition where parts of the uterine lining (endometrium) sheds through the tubes and implants in the pelvic cavity. The result is no symptoms, to chronic pain, to difficulty conceiving, to pelvic masses. It is estimated that endometriosis occurs in 6–10% of women, presenting in the early reproductive years. Laparoscopy at times is used for diagnosis.
Created for people with ongoing healthcare needs but benefits everyone.

Endometriosis is a disease characterized by the aberrant implantation of endometrial glands and stroma in areas outside the uterus. These tissue fragments are biochemically different – and behave differently – than normal endometrium, invading and implanting on surrounding structures causing severe pain; painful sex; bowel, bladder or other organ dysfunction; microscopic internal bleeding; inflammation; scarring and adhesions; and in many cases, infertility. An inflammatory, estrogen-dependent disease that often results in substantial morbidity, pelvic pain, multiple surgeries and fertility complications, endometriosis represents a significant clinical challenge, commonly associated with significant morbidity and reduction in quality of life among the affected.
