Group B Strep: This organism is part of the normal intestinal flora and secondary contamination of the vaginal barrel can occur in several ways, sexual intercourse being less likely than others. A risk factor for the neonate if Mom is a carrier, it is routinely checked for by astute Obstetricians.

Normal gut flora: Streptococcus agalactiae, also called GBS (Group B Streptococcus) is part of normal gut flora, but can spread to secondary sites like the urinary tract, and vagina in women. It can become a serious medical problem if it infects the newborn, or if someone has diabetes a or compromised immune system where the infection can spread to vital organs. Rest easy. Hope that helps.
