Colonization likely: Many women unknowingly are natural carriers or "colonizers" of group b strep in the genital region. There is a known association between group b strep colonization and vaginitis. The colonization may come and go due to natural shifts in the normal populations of bacteria in the vaginal area. The reasons for this are unknown.

Normal bacteria: Group b strep is a normal bacteria in women's vaginal area. Pregnant women need to be tested for group b strep and receive antibiotics to get rid of the bacteria because the bacteria can cause infections for an infant as they come through the birth canal.
