No: 1. make sure that the elastics are not impinging on the soft tissue. 2 make sure you are flossing twice daily and have your dentist check the periodontal pockets for disease.

Ask your dentist: In general gums can get irritated after placing braces and can bleed easier, it could be that the elastic is pushing on the gums, you should ask the dentist to show you how to place it, it may reduce the pressure. On the other hand the gums can adjust to the pressure and bleed less after awhile. Just keep the area clean and check with your hygienist as well.

Ask Orthodontist: Bleeding gums are not normal under any circumstances. Can be because of the location of the elastics or irritation from compromised oral hygiene. Rarely, but occasionally, there is a systemic cause. Start w your Orthodontic Specialist. Referral to your General Dentist or Periodontist may be in order.
