2nd opinion: Orthotics may help your feet quite a bit. However, it is reasonable to expect your podiatrist to examine your feet. If your did not receive an exam on your feet, you may want to go to another podiatrist and receive a second opinion.

Plantar fasciitis: Not to condone his lack of a hands-on physical exam, but he probably determined that you had pes planus (flat feet) and/or plantar fasciitis from your history and his visual exam. Plantar fasciitis is where the fascia that forms the arch of the foot gets inflamed and can be very painful. Those conditions respond to orthotics and anti-inflammatories, and can take days or weeks to fully recover.
