Encephalopathy: It would be inordinately unusual to develop hepatic encephalopathy with "normal bloodwork", but without knowing what tests to which you are referring it is difficult to answer this question intelligently. Violates use of term: So if we are looking at an encephalopathic person and we don't know exactly what's causing the problem of brain dysfunction the only way to KNOW that it were coming from the LIVER vs. KIDNEY vs. SOMETHING ELSE is to do blood work. If blood work were normal then,, the patient simply couldn't have HEPATIC ENCEPHALOPATHY, since the designation of the HEPATIC tells us what's wrong with bloodwork.
