Conscious sedation: If you are going to be consciously sedated for an MRI scan by a radiologist they have alternative medications that get around issues of people who can't tolerate one type of tranquilizer or another. Just be sure the sandman knows what your concerns are with the benzos. Also, you may wish to consider an OPEN MRI if your doctor agrees for which you may not need meds at all. So much the better, no?

Your MRI options: Discuss with your anesthesiologist who will put you into a very light twilight sleep to help you relax and reduce any fear or anxiety. There are many good medications achieving this goal. For example Propofol is a short-acting, intravenously administered hypnotic sedative.
