My 1-year-old son has a sacral dimple, and they are advising an mri (with anesthesia) to check for a tethered cord. is this really necessary?

It depends: An experienced pediatrician can make a good assessment for need for further testing for sacral dimples and other abnormalities to warrant such testing. But please be assured that there are great treatment options for this condition, even for the outside chance of this diagnosis being confirmed by the MRI, as the attached info from the Children's hospital suggests.

No: Unless your son has symptoms related to a possibly tethered cord or it is a dimple that communicates and doesnt come to a blind end, an MRI probably is not necessary.
