Nerve compression: The type of pain you are describing is consistent with nerve compression. This can occur in the lower back from a disc pushing on the nerve root or further down the nerve as well.

Get an EMG: Evaluation by a neurologist or PM&R physician would be helpful. An EMG may be needed to determine precisely where your sensations are likely coming from. *An EMG is a neurophysiologic test that uses electrodes, small electrical shocks and very fine needles to assess the function of nerves.
