Either anterior: Tarsal tunnel syndrome or a nerve impingement in the back would be the two mostu common diagnossis' I'd look at first,

Bone-nion.: It sounds like the paresthesia is isolated to the area of the great toe and occasionally proximal to the mid foot. The popping is in the area of the dorsal great toe. A common cause for symptoms like these is the middle stage of bunion development. Both the nerve and tendon can become affected by the underlying boney elements. Have it evaluated by a foot specialist.
