Get study first: CT scan is useful for looking at the bone of the petrous. Doc is correct in diagnosing you first with the CT. The referral to ENT is appropriate.

Petrus apicitis: CT is the modality of choice to evaluate bony changes in the temporal bone, which in petrous apicitis are erosive lysis with ill-defined irregular edges. Contrast enhanced scans may demonstrate peripheral enhancement as well as dural thickening and enhancement, tho these are better appreciated on MRI. Having the CT in advance of seeing an ENT specialist will give them a heads up. Good luck.
