A member asked:

Is it procedure for a pediatrician to do a vaginal exam on a 3 year old?

Depends: I'm not a pediatrician, but there may be a reason to do an inspection of the labia during a well child check or with complaints of rash in the genital area. In addition I wouldn't be surprised if pediatricians again do an external evaluation to look for evidence of sexual abuse (evidence of perineal trauma). An internal exam is another issue. That would not be routine at all.

Depends: Depends on what you mean by "vaginal exam". It is routine to examine a child's genital area externally during a well child check. This typically amounts to a quick glance at same time of abdominal exam and checking pulses at groin area. It's not common to do any sort of internal exam unless the parent reports that the child is having a problem.

Pediatrician: An examination of the external genitalia is usually done. A rectal is occasionally done if one suspects a vaginal problem
