MS Treatment: We have come a long way in a short time in the way MS is managed. Acute exacerbations are managed with 5-7days of high dose steroids. But, the development of monoclonal antibodies that function as immunomodulators slow down the body's auto-immune response that destroys the myelin sheath that lines vital nerves within the central nervous system. This actually slows the progression of the disease.

MS medications: Suggest if diagnosis of MS is confirmed, that the afflicted individual start a potent medication such as Tysabri (natalizumab) or Gilenya immediately, and follow low fat, low salt diet, do aerobic exercise, supplement Vitamin D, and avoid cigarette smoking. These approaches can stabilize about 75-80% of pts for perhaps several years. If a relapse were to occur, get treated with steroids or ACTH.
