Infection: Did you have an infection at the time ? Probably not, otherwise the periodontist would not have done the surgeries. There is no need to over prescribe antibiotics... you become resistant to them.

Surgeons' decision: There is an evidence based medicine to support the use of antibiotics in gum or bone graft surgeries.The decision to prescribe or not is pure empirical. In some periodontal diseases, data points to contraindication for AB use. There are indications that systemic antibiotics may enhance regeneration of bone, probably by inhibiting mouth microorganisms.
