See A Specialist: Diagnosing asthma in small children is difficult because many of them are unable to perform a spirometry or a fractional exhaled nitric oxide level. As a result, the diagnosis is an educated guess and children are often undertreated or wrongly treated. If your child really has asthma, he should be on an inhaled steroid or at least Montelukast on a daily basis.
